Our Focus

The aim of our conference is to support teachers by sharing the best, most current, evidence-informed practice for raising the attainment of disadvantaged learners.

When is it?

This year's conference will be held virtually through Zoom on the evenings of Monday 28th June to Thursday 1st July from 5pm to 7pm (approximately).

Raising Aspirations

Meet the speakers

Holly Lidbury

Holly Lidbury will be speaking about the work of the National Digital Exploitation Centre and how Cyber Security can be used in the classroom to raise the aspirations of our young people in Wales.

Lucy Purcell/Janice Rees

Lucy Purcell and her colleague Janice Rees will be talking about the impact of the RADY project at The John Frost School in Newport, and how this has helped in raising the attainment of disadvantaged young people at their school.

Leon Ward/Fiona Murden

Leon Ward is the Programme Innovations Director at Future First. A charity which works with state schools to build and unleash the power of alumni networks. In this session, Leon will be joined by psychologist and award winning author Fiona Murden to discuss relatable role models and the impact alumni can have as well as how Future First can help your school.

Tuesday 29th June

Curriculum for Wales

Meet the speakers

Becki Bawler

Becki Bawler, lead teacher for ICT and digital at Risca Community Comprehensive School, will be speaking about how new teachers coming into the profession can help mitigate disadvantage for students by having an impact on the development of the new curriculum within schools.

Alicia Davies

Alicia Davies, Education Associate at The Skills Builder Partnership, will be speaking about the work they do to help develop the key life skills that all students need and how the four purposes can be embedded into the curriculum. 

Dave Spacey

Dave is a former History teacher, and now part of the team at Yr Athrofa, the Centre for Education at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. In this session he'll be zooming out to look at Curriculum for Wales in the wider context of historical and international curriculum reform, considering some of the lessons that we can take from these, and what ideas they can offer as we bring CfW to life in our classrooms, schools and communities.

Meet the speakers

Dr Cat Halligan

Dr Cat Halligan is an educational psychologist who will be speaking about emotion coaching, a strategy teachers can use to help pupils learn to regulate their emotions.

Kayleigh Dando

Kayleigh Dando, Wellbeing Manager at Maesgwyn School in Aberdare, will be diving into the impact that trauma can have on behaviour in the classroom for the young people we educate and support.

Caroline Brindle

Caroline Brindle, Senior Programme Manager for Khulisa UK will be talking about Face It, their therapeutic programme for educational settings, the impact of ACE's and developmental trauma on young people and those who work with them, and how Khulisa uses Perry's Neurosequential Model as a model to ensure young people affected by trauma or adversity have the social skills and emotional support they need to thrive.

Literacy

Meet the speakers

Finola Wilson

Finola Wilson, director at the amazing Impact Wales, will be speaking about teaching vocabulary and strategies which can be used to ensure that pupil vocabulary is as broad as it can be. 

Kelly Bubbins

Kelly Bubbins is Deputy Headteacher at Willows High School, Cardiff. Her educational passion is rooted in strategies that increase the life chances and cultural capital of pupils. Her presentation will look at strategies for improving both reading ability and quality within the classroom and across the school. 

Cathryn Billington-Richards

Cathryn is the Strategic Lead for LLC, with responsibility for developing standards in these areas across the region. She has over 20 years teaching experience across the secondary and all-through phase in a range of school settings.  Cathryn will be exploring some of the issues around the teaching of writing and the pedagogical and curriculum approaches that can be used to address these.
